The Project on
Roberts Lake

Our Goal

The A.W.S's primary goal is to build Canada's first, Universally Designed wilderness lodge and campground facility on Roberts Lake here on Vancouver Island.

It is our hope that the Roberts Lake Project will act as a prototype or for other projects across the Province of British Columbia. In time we expect others to use this Project as a benchmark for more facilities like this across the country.

The Vision

This project, when complete, will have two components, the lodge itself and the campground facility a short distance away. The exact appeareance in terms of size and scope is constantly evolving as we move forward. A more exact visual is expected very soon once our forestry and site development plans are complete.

Phase 1

The first phase of the this project is the development of the campground area. We hope to begin this part of the project in the Fall of 2013. The campground design itself is unique in that the purpose is to help optimize the wilderness experience.

The average Provincial campground is designed in a manner that requires that campers acquire a specific campsite and drive their vehicles and gear to that specified area.

What we still need

The land is there waiting for us. We have companies like Strategic Natural Resource Consultants ready to step in and assist with the development of a forest management and site development plan. What we need now is a road, an 800m road to be more precise. We need a road engineer or company willing to provide us with the road design plans. We need a road building company that is willing to build it after the plans are complete. If you are that individual or company, please contact us so we can talk more about working together to get this project moving forward.

We often say that this facility, when complete, will be for "Every-Body". That statement is true, it will however also to everyone to make it a reality. This "everyone" includes the government, Federal and Provincial, it's going to take Corporations and small business and it's going to take Individuals as well.

We're ready to get started...want to come along for the ride?

You Can Help

The Accessible Wilderness Society is for "Every-Body" so it stands to reason it will take "Everyone" to help make it happen. The AWS needs volunteers who are willing to act as advisors or possibly to become a Board of Direct in order to share their expertise as this Project moves forward. If you have experience in any of the following areas or if you share our passion then we'd love to hear from you.

  • General Contracting
  • Marketing
  • Grant Writing
  • Fundraising
  • Media
  • Legal/Accounting
